The “Associazione Nazionale Piede Torto Congenito”, with Silvia and Marco, went to Bangladesh for a busy week at the side of Dr. Anna Ey Batlle, guests of the foundation LMRF (Lion Mukhlesur Rahman Foundation). The project “Zero Clubfoot” is active for 6 years and they treated more than 3200 children born with clubfoot. In Chittagong, the second largest city of Bangladesh, LMRF offers free a big hospital for treatment of clubfoot. In each region there is a free hospital for the treatment of this pathology. Casts, braces and all care for clubfoot are provided for free by specialized doctors trained on the Ponseti method.
Their casts are perfect ,no pain ,no problems. The results, are documented from the personal folder of each newborn, with the progress in every step of the treatment. Dr Anna Ey gave further suggestions for improving the application of the casts in the newborns. The main aim of the trip was to show that, with simple, precise manipulations and a minimally invasive surgery you can get great results in feet treated NEVER before. Dr Anna gave the opportunity for people never treated before to have normal feet and a normal life. Personally I had to hold back tears several times to see so many children suffering from this disease, to see how professionalism and humanity Dr. Anna Ey accommodates small or large patients.
It is important to observe how carefully Dr. Anna touches the feet of patients throughout the duration of the visit. I had to hide the thrill to see how with a few casts, even in Bangladesh, correct the clubfoot, comparing these results to the disastrous cures that have been made on my daughter.
Wandering between many families in the waiting room I could see with my own eyes many beautiful feet effectively corrected con the Ponseti method effectively applied.
The welcome that these extraordinary doctors, physiotherapists and the whole team of LMRF ,Dr. Shamim Khan, the executive director, gave us ,was truly unexpected and extraordinary. The course on the Ponseti method, held by Mrs. Anna Ey, was followed with great interest by doctors at the center in Chittagong, also arrived from other cities in the country.
Dr Anna operated some patients with clubfoot, did percutaneous tenotomies also on children of 11 years, under local anesthesia. With fasciotomy, tenotomy, and tibialis anterior tendon transfer on a child treated with the Codivilla, Dr Anna showed that a foot may still be correct. All followed the surgery in streaming in a large room adjacent to the operating room.
It was a great pleasure to know the team of young doctors LMRF, led by Dr. Shamim Khan, and see that in Bangladesh are the doctors who inform, unlike our country where these informations are given by parents Thank you for all that you have taught us and for the incredible hospitality you have given us.
We hope to go to Bangladesh soon!
